Nikolaidis Mansion

The mansion was built in phases in the 17th-18th century and is divided into two floors. Its construction is based on the architectural characteristics of Patmos but it also has two gothic windows on the first floor.

There are two main entrances leading to the respective semi-open courtyards. The ground floor houses the storage facilities, the "fournario” (place where they baked the food) and the storage area of crops. The single-aisle, vaulted chapel that was dedicated to St Nicholas, belongs to the mansion too. In the ground floor there are the tanks which collected rainwater. On the first floor there are the rooms they used to sleep in as well as the room for the reception of guests and the big terraces which facilitated communication between the rooms.

One of the most impressive items in the mansion is "ampataros”, a complex wooden object with double function: storage space and a separation between rooms. It was a key feature of rich houses of the 18th and 19th century. The difficulty of its construction, but also its elaborate decoration made it an object of great value and social status. It depicts people on horses chasing with their dogs, various birds (eagles, peacocks, owls) or the mythical unicorn.

After the earthquake of 1956, the mansion was severely damaged and had to be restored. The mansion and the archaeological findings it hosts will show you the lifestyle of the people in the past and you will get to know the history of the island from prehistoric to modern times.
