Sacristy of the Monastery of St. John the Theologian

This is the most important attraction of the monastery of St. John and it is considered to be the biggest museum in the Aegean. It was inaugurated in 1988, nine hundred years since the founding of the monastery. In the museum's showcases there are valuable treasures such as the parchment of the Crimson Code (late 5th early 6th century) and the edict of Alexios Komninos (1088) with which he gave the whole island of Patmos to Saint Christodoulos.

The cave is located north near the Monastery of St. John the Theologian. It is the worship place of a building complex known as the Monastery of the Apocalypse. The Chapel of St. John has been built in the spacious opening of the cave. Its wooden iconostasis is decorated with important post-Byzantine paintings. The main iconographic theme of the Chapel is the depiction of Saint John who narrates the Revelation to his student.

Monastery of St. John Theologian

The first buildings (1088-1093) were the Katholikon, the cistern (tank), some cells and a large part of the walls. In the 12th century the chapels of Our Lady and Saint Christodoulos were built. In the 16th century new and important buildings were constructed: the Chapel of the Holy Cross, the Chapel of the Apostles, the Chapel of St. Basil and the sacristy next to the church. In the last decade of the 17th century a large building project (named after the Metropolitan of Karpathos, Grimanis Neophytos) took place and the monastery acquired the appearance it has nowadays.

Kathismata

The hermitages of Patmos are also known as “kathismata” (=”seats” in Greek). The cells were established by monks inside caves and they were usually depending on the Monastery of St. John the Theologian. Kalikatsou, the most ancient hermitage, is located at Petra (=”rock” in Greek). In the "seat" of Apollo (a person of the New Testament, fiery preacher of the Gospel) there is a windmill, a threshing floor and a well. Today many of the cells are restored and have become extensions of the auxiliary buildings beside them.
